How often should enclosure fans and filters be cleaned?
There is no universal interval — it depends on dust load, filter class, duty cycle and how much margin the fan had at selection. The honest method: instrument the filter's pressure drop (or the fan's current) at commissioning, trend it, and set the interval from the measured slope, then verify at the first service. A guessed interval is either wasteful (too early) or dangerous (too late, with flow below the thermal requirement).
Set the interval from a trend
At commissioning, record the filter's clean ΔP and the fan's current at a reference duty. Trend both over the first weeks of service. When ΔP reaches the end-of-life threshold established in your validation (the pressure at which installed flow still meets the thermal requirement), that elapsed time in that site is your first real interval — adjust for seasonal dust variation. Sites differ by an order of magnitude; a textile mill and an office server closet share nothing.
| Data source | What it shows | Interval decision |
|---|---|---|
| Filter ΔP trend | Loading rate vs threshold | Time to reach end-of-life ΔP |
| Fan current trend | Mechanical + aero drift | Cross-check against ΔP |
| Visual inspection | Sludge, bypass leaks, wear | Confirm/adjust the model |
| Seasonal variation | Dry vs wet season loading | Split intervals per season |
Monitoring options by budget
Lowest cost: scheduled visual inspection with a torch and a ΔP check at commissioning visits. Mid: a mechanical ΔP indicator or pressure switch across the filter that flags service visually or raises a signal. Highest: a differential-pressure sensor logged by the host controller, turning the filter into telemetry — worthwhile where service visits are expensive or sites are remote. Pair filter monitoring with the fan's own health signals (current, tach) so a cleaning visit also catches mechanical trends.
- Alarm threshold from validation data, not a generic multiplier.
- Log current and tach at each service visit — two numbers, one minute.
- After any enclosure change (new filter class, added gaskets), re-baseline.
