How does a loading filter change the fan's operating point?
A filter's pressure drop rises as it loads with dust, steepening the system resistance curve. The operating point slides up the fan curve toward higher pressure and lower flow — installed flow can drop 10–30% between a clean and a service-limited filter, depending on the filter class and the dust environment. Design to the dirty state; validate both states.
The mechanics
Dust accumulation both narrows the filter's open area and increases its flow resistance, so the system curve rotates steeper around zero flow. The intersection with the fan curve moves toward shut-off: less flow, more pressure. On a flat region of the fan curve a modest pressure rise costs little flow; on a steep region the same rise is expensive. Filter loading is therefore also a fan-curve-shape question, not only a filter question.
| Filter state | System curve | Installed flow (typical) | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clean | design baseline | 100% | Commissioning record |
| Part loaded | steeper | ≈90–95% | Monitor ΔP |
| Service limit | steepest | ≈70–90% | Alarm / replace filter |
Designing for it
Write the flow requirement at the dirty state, then select a fan with margin at the corresponding pressure. Prefer fans with a flatter curve at the operating region (higher static-pressure capability relative to free-air flow) when the path is filter-dominated. Instrument the filter: a differential-pressure switch or sensor across the filter converts an invisible degradation into an actionable alarm — pick the threshold from the validation data, not from a generic multiplier.
- Specify end-of-life ΔP target and its flow consequence numerically.
- Add a ΔP switch across the filter where service access is difficult.
- Re-check acoustic behaviour at end-of-life duty — pressure rise changes tone.
Validation
Run the thermal validation twice: clean filter and a bench-simulated service-limit filter (or a pre-loaded filter from a used unit). Record flow proxy (ΔT or pressure), fan duty, and component temperatures at both states. If the product ships to dust environments, a loading trial in the field — measuring ΔP trend over weeks — turns the assumption into data. Our salt-fog and dust-environment article covers the companion corrosion side of dirty environments.
