How do I protect cooling fans in coastal or corrosive environments?

Salt attacks fans through three paths: corrosion of bare metal (frame, screws, ball bearings), electrical degradation of the PCB and connector, and salt-laden dust loading the inlet. Protection is layered: conformal-coated PCB, corrosion-protected frame and fasteners, sealed or protected bearing system, and a drain-and-filter strategy — validated under a recognized salt-fog method such as IEC 60068-2-52 at a severity matched to the site.

How salt actually kills a fan

Airborne salt deposits are hygroscopic: they pull moisture, form a conductive electrolyte film, and corrode. On the frame, fasteners and exposed ball-bearing surfaces it is straightforward rust. On the PCB it causes leakage currents, track corrosion and eventual drive failure — often the first failure mode, ahead of visible rust. In the air path, salt-sticky dust loads blades and filters faster than plain dust. Distance from the coast drives severity: within a few hundred metres of breaking surf, severity is an order of magnitude above inland.

Attack pathFirst symptomProtection
PCB / drive electronicsDrive failure, erratic controlConformal coating, sealed connectors
Frame & fastenersRust stains, seized screwsCoated frame, stainless hardware
BearingsRough running, noise growthProtected bearing system, seals
Air pathFlow loss, imbalanceFiltering, drain strategy, washability
The PCB usually fails before the frame looks bad — if the fan died 'without visible corrosion', suspect the conformal coating, not the bearing.

Protection layers and test methods

Specify in writing: conformal-coated PCB (state the coating class), coated or aluminium frame with stainless fasteners, connector protection, and a filter/drain architecture matched to the site. For qualification, IEC 60068-2-52 (salt mist, sequential) is the standard method used for electronic products, with severity levels matched to exposure class — agree the severity with the fan maker explicitly, since 'salt-fog tested' without a method and severity is not a spec. MEGA Tech applies corrosion-protected constructions for coastal and industrial-corrosive projects; see our salt-fog selection article for the full decision framework.
