Do two fans in parallel double the airflow?

Not automatically. Two identical fans in parallel can move up to twice the flow only at zero pressure; at any real resistance the combined flow gain is smaller, and the array can become unstable if it operates in the stall region. Series (stacked) fans add pressure instead: up to double at zero flow. Both arrangements must be judged against the system curve.

How the combined curves are built

For parallel fans, add the flows of one fan curve at each pressure value. For series fans, add the pressures at each flow value. Then intersect the combined curve with the system curve exactly as for a single fan. On a low-resistance system (open grille, short path), parallel wins. On a high-resistance system (dense filter, long duct, heat sink), series can outperform parallel.

The gain you actually get is the intersection of the combined curve with your system curve — never the theoretical double.

Failure modes people miss

Parallel axial fans operating in the stall region can load-share badly: one fan takes the flow while the other recirculates, which shows up as vibration, tonal noise and uneven wear. When one fan of a parallel array stops, air can flow backwards through the idle fan, short-circuiting the array — that is why RD/FG monitoring and a check-valve or baffle strategy matter in N+1 designs.

Validation checklist for arrays

Measure total installed flow or array pressure with all fans running; repeat with one fan disabled. Verify the remaining fans hold the required flow, no reverse flow develops through the idle fan, and alarms report correctly. Repeat at worst-case filter loading and highest ambient. An array that has only been tested intact is not validated.
