How can I verify the airflow a fan actually delivers in my product?
Four methods, in rising order of rigour: (1) the ΔT energy balance using measured inlet/outlet air temperatures, (2) inferring flow from measured pressure and the system curve, (3) a flow bench per AMCA 210/ISO 5801 for the fan alone, and (4) component temperature verdicts — which is what the product actually cares about. For qualification decisions, use two of them and require agreement.
Method 1 — the ΔT energy balance
Measure air temperature at the inlet plane and at the exhaust plane with the product at full thermal load. Flow ≈ P / (ρ · cp · ΔT), where P is the electrical heat load dissipated to air and ΔT the measured rise. With P = 300 W and ΔT = 8 K: Q ≈ 300/(1.2×1005×8) ≈ 0.031 m³/s ≈ 66 CFM. Accuracy is limited by how well you know P and how well the two probe positions sample the mean temperature — 15–25% is a realistic band, adequate for verification, not for labelling.
| Method | Measures | Realistic accuracy | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| ΔT energy balance | Flow through the unit | ±15–25% | Whole-unit verification |
| Pressure + system curve | Flow via curve inference | ±20–30% | Trend tracking |
| Flow bench (AMCA/ISO) | Fan alone | ±2–5% | Fan characterization |
| Component temperatures | Thermal result | verdict, not flow | Acceptance criterion |
Method 2 — pressure with the system curve
If you have characterized the enclosure's resistance once (pressure measured at two or more known flow states, fitted as ΔP = K·Q²), a later single pressure reading infers the flow. This is the cheapest monitoring method for filter-loading trends and fleet checks — but the curve drifts if the hardware changes (new filter type, added gaskets), so re-fit after any mechanical change.
Methods 3 and 4 — bench and verdict
A flow bench gives the fan's true P-Q performance to a standard and is the right instrument for comparing candidates before installation. It cannot see your enclosure. Component temperatures — junction, winding, bearing housing, the parts with limits — are the verdict the design review needs: measure them at worst-case ambient and duty for both the incumbent and the candidate, and let the temperatures, not the flow arguments, close the decision. MEGA Tech's sample validation packages pair bench curves with on-unit thermal data in exactly this structure.
Send MEGA Tech your airflow and static pressure target, voltage, size limit, control interface, quantity and environment. We reply with a selection proposal and a sample plan — selection by operating condition, samples validated on your unit.
