How do I estimate required airflow from heat load?

Start from the energy balance: airflow = heat load divided by (density × specific heat × allowed temperature rise). For air near sea level, 500 W with an allowed 10 K rise needs about 0.042 m³/s (≈88 CFM). That figure is a theoretical minimum — it assumes the air sweeps the heat source and leaves at exactly ΔT. Real products need margin.

The formula and the worked example

Q = P / (ρ · cp · ΔT). With ρ = 1.2 kg/m³, cp = 1,005 J/(kg·K), P = 500 W and ΔT = 10 K: Q = 500/(1.2×1005×10) ≈ 0.0415 m³/s ≈ 88 CFM ≈ 149 m³/h. Halve the allowed rise to 5 K and the requirement doubles to ~176 CFM — the allowed ΔT is the most powerful (and most abused) variable in this calculation.

Heat loadAllowed ΔTMinimum flow (sea level)
100 W10 K≈18 CFM
500 W10 K≈88 CFM
500 W5 K≈176 CFM
1,000 W10 K≈176 CFM
The allowed ΔT is a design decision, not a datasheet value. Component limits — not the enclosure average — set it.

Margin: why the minimum is never enough

The energy balance assumes perfect sweep. Real enclosures lose flow to recirculation through gaps, bypass channels that short-circuit the heat source, filter loading that reduces installed flow over time, and non-uniform velocity across hot spots. Practical screening practice is to multiply the theoretical minimum by 1.5–2.5, then verify the true operating point in the assembly rather than trusting the calculation alone.

From estimate to selection

Take the margined flow, sketch the system resistance (inlet area, filter, path length, exhaust), and choose a fan whose P-Q curve intersects the system curve at or above the target flow. Then validate: measure inlet and exhaust air temperature in the loaded product and confirm the achieved ΔT and component temperatures. Iterate once — the first installed measurement always beats a week of spreadsheet work.
