How do fan imbalance and mounting affect vibration?

Fan vibration comes from two sources: residual rotor imbalance inside the fan, and how the mounting couples that excitation into your chassis. A rigid mount transmits imbalance faithfully to the structure; a soft mount isolates it but adds its own resonance. Verify vibration on the assembled unit at the customer's measurement point — a fan that is silent on a foam pad can hum through a sheet-metal wall.

Imbalance basics

Imbalance is a mass offset of the rotating assembly; its force grows with the square of speed, so the same fan vibrates far more at top speed. Balance quality is graded (ISO 21940 series for rotors; ISO 14694 addresses industrial fan balance grades). Within a fan catalogue, differences between speed bins matter more than the absolute grade — and unit-to-unit spread is why field vibration complaints cluster on a few serials, not all of them.

A beat (slow pulsing) from two parallel fans running at slightly different speeds is often mistaken for a bearing fault — check the other fan first.

Mounting: rigid, soft, or in between

Rigid mounting (screws into sheet metal) transmits imbalance and blade-pass excitation into large radiating panels — often the loudest path in the product. Soft mounting (rubber grommets, isolated brackets) isolates high-frequency vibration but introduces its own resonance where the mount's stiffness meets the assembly's mass; a badly chosen grommet can make things worse at one particular speed. The middle path — damped mounts — trades isolation against damping and usually wins in product work.

Verification on the unit

Measure vibration (accelerometer or a phone-class vibration app for screening) at the panel the customer hears, across the duty range, at both temperature extremes if the mount material is temperature-sensitive. Compare incumbent vs candidate under identical mounts. MEGA Tech validates fan samples on the customer's mounting hardware where requested — imbalance-driven field noise is a system problem, and the fix usually lives in the interface, not inside the fan.
