How do I cross-reference a competitor fan to your product?
Extract five things from the competitor datasheet — operating point (flow at a stated pressure, not free air), rated voltage and window, current, speed/noise, and the electrical interface (PWM/FG/RD, connector). Ignore the part number itself: it encodes the maker's internal options, not performance. Then match a candidate by curve intersection and validate it on the unit.
Step 1 — extract the operating point
Most catalogues publish the free-air CFM and a P-Q curve. Read the flow at a realistic pressure instead: find where the competitor's curve sits at your enclosure's resistance — for electronics enclosures typically 0.05–0.30 inH₂O (12–75 Pa). Write that pair down as the target. A candidate only needs to beat the competitor at that point, not everywhere on the curve.
| Extract from datasheet | Why | Trap |
|---|---|---|
| Flow at stated pressure | True comparison point | Free-air CFM is marketing |
| Voltage & tolerance | Rail compatibility | 12 V may mean 9–13.2 V window |
| Current (rated/inrush) | Supply sizing | Inrush can be 5–10× steady |
| Speed & noise @ 1 m | Acoustics baseline | sones vs dB(A) confusion |
| PWM/FG/RD & connector | Interface match | PPR and logic differences |
Step 2 — map to a candidate family
Match frame size, voltage and the performance class first, then narrow by interface: PWM control, tach output, RD alarm, connector and wire length. Where the competitor part specifies a special option (environmental coating, speed bin, lead length), carry the requirement over explicitly — options are where replacements usually fail, not performance.
- Note airflow direction on the competitor part (some families ship both).
- Record tach pulses-per-revolution and PWM frequency range.
- Carry over any coating, marking or packaging requirement in writing.
Step 3 — validate on the unit
Order samples, then qualify: installed flow or thermal result in the real assembly, electrical measurements at rail extremes, tach reading on the host controller, acoustic spot-check, and a documented first-article record. MEGA Tech supports cross-referencing of Sanyo Denki SAN ACE, SUNON, Delta, NMB and ebm-papst families — send the competitor part number and the operating point, and we return a candidate with the data needed for step 3.
Send MEGA Tech your airflow and static pressure target, voltage, size limit, control interface, quantity and environment. We reply with a selection proposal and a sample plan — selection by operating condition, samples validated on your unit.
