Why does my fan control loop hunt (oscillate)?
Hunting — the fan speeding up and slowing down in visible or audible cycles — comes from loop dynamics, not usually from a bad fan. The usual suspects: a sensor placed where fan airflow hits it directly (instant response to speed changes, before the heat source reacts), long thermal lag misread as instability, a steep duty→speed region, and an on/off control law with no hysteresis. Fix the loop; do not just slow the fan down.
Diagnose the cycle first
Log duty, tach speed, and the control temperature at 1 Hz for ten minutes. The pattern tells you the cause: a clean periodic cycle with duty swings of tens of percent points to on/off control or a steep map region; slow drift cycles of minutes are thermal mass lag with over-aggressive gain; fast jitter of seconds near a fixed duty is usually the stall floor or sensor noise. Match the cure to the pattern instead of tuning blind.
| Pattern | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Fast periodic (seconds) | Steep map region / floor | Rate-limit duty slew |
| Slow periodic (minutes) | Thermal lag + high gain | Add hysteresis; slow the integral |
| Irregular bursts | Sensor in airflow path | Relocate / thermally mass the sensor |
| Duty pinned at floor | Loop fights minimum speed | Re-base control table |
The six practical cures
(1) Relocate the sensor to a thermally representative point on the heat source, not in the fan's jet. (2) Add hysteresis or use a PI law instead of bang-bang. (3) Rate-limit duty changes to a few percent per second — this alone silences most audible hunting. (4) Re-map control through the measured duty→speed table so one percent of duty is a similar speed step everywhere. (5) Give the loop a minimum speed floor and control above it. (6) If structural resonance couples the fan to the chassis, mount isolation — vibration feedback masquerades as control instability.
- Cure the sensor location first — it is the cause in a large share of field cases.
- Rate-limiting duty is cheap and almost always helps audibility.
- Check that the 'instability' is not real thermal undersizing: a loop that cannot hold temperature at 100% duty is a fan problem, not a control problem.
