How should fans be stored, and does storage age them?
Fans age slowly in storage, and the dominant mechanism is the lubricant, not the electronics: long static storage lets bearing grease settle and separate, which can raise breakaway torque when the fan finally runs. Store sealed in their original packaging in a temperature- and humidity-controlled space, cycle long-stored stock before use, and requalify samples from any batch stored for years before releasing it to production.
Storage conditions that matter
Keep fans in their original moisture-barrier packaging, in a dry, temperature-stable space — standard industry guidance for electronic components (moderate room temperature, controlled humidity, no condensation cycling) applies. Avoid the three accelerators: high heat (grease degradation), condensation cycles (corrosion of the unplugged connector and ball surfaces), and vibration sources (grease migration and brinelling). Fans in sealed ESD-safe bags on a stable shelf are close to suspended animation compared with fans in a hot, humid, vibrating warehouse.
- Original sealed packaging, room temperature, controlled humidity.
- Away from heat sources and vibration sources.
- FIFO stock rotation so no batch sits beyond your requalification horizon.
Long-stored stock: cycle before use
For fans stored a long time, common industry practice is to run the fan briefly (or rotate the shaft) before service, letting the lubricant redistribute — and to expect a short run-in period where noise settles. If a batch has been stored for years, pull first-article samples and requalify: start-up behaviour at minimum voltage, noise character, tach function and current. This is cheap insurance against the rare-but-real 'new old stock runs rough' complaint.
- Power-cycle stored fans briefly before installation as standard practice.
- Requalify samples from any batch stored for multiple years.
- Treat higher breakaway torque after storage as a lubricant-settlement symptom — it usually settles after a short run-in; persistent roughness is a reject.
What we do on our side
Fans shipped by MEGA Tech are packed in sealed protective packaging with FIFO stock discipline, and samples for validation are drawn from current production. If your project has a long build horizon, tell us the expected consumption timeline when you order samples — packaging and lot-freshness guidance are part of the sample pack, and we will match production lots to your schedule where the quantity justifies it.
Send MEGA Tech your airflow and static pressure target, voltage, size limit, control interface, quantity and environment. We reply with a selection proposal and a sample plan — selection by operating condition, samples validated on your unit.
